The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness

I read a lot of books. I read every night in bed before I go to sleep so I read for absolute pleasure and I read fairly quickly. For this reason, I really don’t like phonetic spelling. I realise the reasoning behind the device but it messes with my reading and I just don’t like it. It’s unlikely that I would have started “The Knife of Never Letting Go” if I’d known, but once I start I don’t stop.
Having said that, it’s quite a decent storyline. I like the idea of starting again on a new planet and it’s quite clever the way that the author has thought about how that would work and what would be needed. I liked the characters of Todd and Viola and I loved little Manchee and the idea of “Noise” is again a clever one.
I did feel however, that this was far too much a “one third of a trilogy” novel. I really didn’t like the last few chapters and the ending felt as if a big book had been arbitrarily cut into three parts and that place seemed as good as any to stop. It wasn’t good for me I’m afraid – I like big books. I won’t be reading the other two in the series.
